IB Info Night Resources

IB is a program which focuses on an international mindset, a learner profile, and a diploma core in addition to rigorous courses. IB offers more writing and in-depth discussion in our classes and exams. The diploma also requires that students complete CAS, an extended essay, and the Theory of Knowledge course.  IB exam scores are a combination of exams in May and internal assessments which are given during the school year.

Our IB students will take IB, rather than AP, core courses (for the most part) but can take dual credit, AP or onlevel courses that fit in their schedules

 The International Honors (IH) Program is a locally developed program for 9th and 10th graders who attend the IB World School. Students are enrolled in honors courses which focus on the IB learner profile and an international mindset in order to prepare them for work as an IB Diploma Programme student.

SL (Standard level) courses are one year courses, and HL (Higher level) courses span two years. In order to earn an IB diploma, students must complete 3 HL and 3 SL courses (and exams) or 4 HL and 2 SL courses (and exams) during their junior and senior years.

9th and 10th grade students only have access to courses that other 9th and 10th graders take in the school district, so the GPA at the World School is consistent with offerings across the school district. Most IH courses are 4.5, and most IB courses are 5.0.

Yes. IB courses are challenging, but the majority of our students are involved in at least one sport or fine arts or extracurricular activity.

If you are planning for your child to attend TAMS, he/she should go to his/her assigned high school. TAMS takes students from every high school in Plano ISD, so there is no advantage in coming to the IB World School, and it takes a spot from another student who is planning to stay for four years. The same is true for students who are not sure about pursuing an IB diploma- they should not come to our programme in grade 9.

The majority of incoming ninth graders will eventually be chosen because sometimes admitted students change their minds and do not accept placement. If your child is waitlisted, be patient. Also know that students can enter the IB World School as freshman, sophomores, or juniors. We admit all interested juniors to the IB programme if they have completed the prerequisite coursework.

No. Although the IB diploma is recognized internationally, the vast majority of our students (98%) continue on to higher education in the United States.
 

Currently the cost to take the 6 required IB exams is $714 and $180 for students who qualify for free/reduced lunch.
 

In Texas, in accordance withTexas Education Code 51.968, Texas (public) universities will award at least 24 course specific semester credit hours to those students who have earned an International Baccalaureate Diploma and present IB exam scores of 4 or higher. The majority of our students are awarded 30-60 college credits from their college/university.
 

We will have an Open House for accepted students in January/February of 2026.  Students will go on tours and have the opportunity to meet with core and elective teachers on that night.
