The Extended Essay
Extended Essay
The Extended Essay, or EE, is an in-depth study of a focused topic chosen by the IB student when he or she is in 11th grade. The student normally writes his EE in one of his six chosen IB subjects, or a subject in which he has experience, knowledge, or interest. The EE is intended to promote academic research and teaches the student to create a thoughtful question, engage with learning about the topic, communicate clearly, and then develop his/her argument in the essay.
Students conduct research for their EE during their junior year and then produce a 4,000-word piece of formally presented, structured writing in which their ideas and findings are communicated clearly. The EE is due on the first day of a student's senior year but is polished and then formally submitted to the IB later in the year. All students who have completed Diploma Programme Year 1 are invited to an Extended Essay summer camp immediately following their junior year. Students are encouraged to complete their extended essays during this informative camp.
