The IB Curriculum (11th and 12th grade)

Six subject groups comprise the core of the IB curriculum. The IB Diploma candidate is required to select one subject from each of the six areas.

Group 1: Language A English
Group 2: Language B Language other then English
Group 3: Individuals and Societies History, Economics
Group 4: Experimental Sciences Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, Computer Science
Group 5: Mathematics Mathematics HL, Mathematics SL, and Mathematical Studies
Group 6: Arts & Electives Visual Arts, Environmental Systems, Computer Science, (or a second group 2, 3, or 4)

At least three and not more than four of the six subjects are taken at the Higher Level (HL). The remaining courses are taken at the Standard Level (SL) (one-year course). Each examined subject is graded on a scale of 1 to 7.

To be eligible for the award of the IB Diploma at the conclusion of the senior year, all candidates, during the l1th and 12th grades, must

  • earn a total of at least 24 points in the final IB score.
  •  successfully complete prescribed course work and an examination from each of the above groups.
  •  submit an extended essay of 4000 words in one of the subjects of the IB curriculum.
  • complete the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course.
  • complete the experiential learning portion of the program, Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS) program.


The Diploma Hexagon

The program has the strengths of a traditional and broad curriculum, but with three important additional features, shown at the centre of the hexagonal curriculum model.
